The National Assembly Joint Committee on Aviation on Wednesday focused on ongoing improvements in the aviation sector as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), appeared before lawmakers to defend the ministry’s 2025 budget and outline reform efforts.

Leading his presentation with progress recorded across aviation agencies, Keyamo said the ministry had prioritised operational efficiency, safety compliance, and institutional restructuring to reposition the sector. He noted improvements in regulatory coordination, enhanced security assessments, and better reporting mechanisms as part of efforts to align Nigeria’s aviation industry with global standards.

Addressing concerns over reported zero per cent financial performance in some budget lines, the minister explained that the figures reflected delays in cash releases rather than a lack of activity. He said critical operations, including flight safety oversight and security logistics, were ongoing despite funding constraints.

The session also examined measures to streamline administrative processes, reduce duplication, and improve inter-agency collaboration. Keyamo told lawmakers that the ministry was working to strengthen transparency and ensure that available funds are channelled toward priority areas.

Discussions further touched on airport operations, including security protocols and passenger experience. Submissions before the committee called for more efficient management of airport procedures to enhance Nigeria’s global aviation image and investor confidence.

The minister assured the committee that all issues raised would be addressed during upcoming budget defence sessions before the Appropriation Committee, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to accountability and sector-wide reform.

Lawmakers pledged continued oversight to sustain improvements and ensure value for money in the aviation sector.
