Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has been honored with the Silent Hero in Management Award at the 8th Silent Heroes Awards Abuja 2026, with the union leader dedicating the recognition to journalists who continue to uphold professionalism despite the challenges confronting the media industry.

Speaking after receiving the award, Ike described the recognition as both humbling and inspiring, saying it would strengthen her resolve to continue serving the journalism profession with integrity, responsibility, and dedication.

She thanked the organisers for finding her worthy of the honour, noting that the award transcends personal achievement and reflects the collective efforts of journalists, media professionals, and union members working tirelessly to strengthen the profession.

“I consider this honour not merely as a personal achievement, but as a tribute to every journalist, media professional and union member who works tirelessly behind the scenes to strengthen our profession and advance the ideals of responsible journalism,” she said.

Ike stressed that the successes recorded by the NUJ FCT Council were products of teamwork, sacrifice, and collective service by members, executive officers, chapel leaders, veterans of the profession, and strategic partners.

She reaffirmed her commitment to improving the welfare of journalists, promoting capacity building, strengthening ethical journalism, fostering unity within the union, and creating opportunities to enhance the professional and economic well-being of members.

The NUJ FCT Chairman also urged journalists to remain steadfast in defending truth, democracy, and accountability amid growing concerns over misinformation and insecurity.

“As journalists, we remain custodians of truth, defenders of democracy and advocates for accountability. At a time when misinformation, insecurity and other social challenges continue to test our society, our profession must remain guided by ethics, professionalism, fairness and public interest,” she said.

Ike dedicated the award to journalists across Nigeria who continue to discharge their duties with courage and professionalism despite numerous challenges, while appreciating the support of her family, mentors, colleagues, and associates throughout her leadership journey.

She also commended the organisers of the Silent Heroes Awards for recognising individuals whose contributions often go unnoticed, describing the initiative as a worthy platform for celebrating selfless service and impactful leadership.
