Constitution Review: Women Can Turn Things Around In Nigeria – Says NNPP women leader
The National women leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Maryam Bello Jummai has said that the panacea for development in Nigeria is women inclusiveness.
She said Nigeria is better off with women in elective positions, as well as in appointment, adding that the old system where children of the rich are given appointments or allow to contest elective positions in the expense of best brains should be jettison.
She made her position known during the international legislative dialogue on women and constitution amendment in Nigeria organized by PLAC in conjunction with the European Union and the House Committee on Constitution Review,
According to her, “Nigeria can be better with the right women in the right places. We must move away from a situation where appointments to women are giving based on man knows man instead of competences.
“You see in Nigeria only children of one big man or the other are appointed into positions of authority, and at the end they won’t know what to do. Why can’t we bring the most qualified, especially women irrespective of their backgrounds to governance of all levels. Women have the key to societal development, Nigeria inclusive.
“I am very delighted with thie house of representatives program on how to mainstream the women into elective offices especially in the parliaments. In fact, if the bill is consented to by Mr. President I see a greater Nigeria,” she said
She emphasized that our leaders should learn how to bring the right people to position of authority and not the usual way of appointing cronies or their children
Meanwhile, she congratulated the house committee on Constitution Review chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu for decision so far for women inclusion.
