The African Democratic Congress National Legislators Forum (ADC-NLF) has criticized recent remarks by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu describing the party’s National Convention as “noise” and a “street event,” saying the comments undermine democratic values.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the lawmakers defended the party’s decision to hold what they described as a “people-driven” convention, noting that logistical challenges influenced the format but did not diminish its legitimacy. They argued that the exercise reflected participatory democracy and direct engagement with citizens.

The forum also expressed concern over comments on matters currently before the courts, warning that such interventions could be perceived as attempts to influence judicial proceedings. It emphasized the need to preserve the independence of the judiciary, particularly in politically sensitive cases.

ADC legislators further raised alarm over remarks attributed to the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, which they said could be interpreted as encouraging interference in the internal affairs of the opposition party and ongoing litigation.

The group also questioned the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing concerns over what it described as inconsistent handling of party leadership issues. It urged the electoral body to maintain fairness and adhere strictly to its constitutional mandate.

Reaffirming their commitment to democratic governance, the lawmakers called on all institutions to respect the rule of law and ensure a level playing field for all political actors.
