Former Minister for Youths and Sports, and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Solomon Dalung, has expressed confidence in the party’s strength ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite internal disputes and external pressures.
Speaking at the party’s national convention, Solomon said the ADC’s resilience in the face of challenges demonstrates its readiness to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
According to him, “the resilience of the party is a guarantee to Nigerians that ADC represents a platform of hope.”
He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of overstepping its constitutional bounds by interfering in the party’s internal affairs. Solomon alleged that the commission acted beyond its powers by attempting to interpret court judgments and altering party leadership records on its portal.
“Under our Constitution, only the courts have the authority to interpret laws. INEC has no such power,” he stated, describing the commission’s actions as an attempt to destabilize the party ahead of the electoral cycle.
Despite these challenges, he noted that the ADC remained focused and successfully conducted its ward, local government, and state congresses, culminating in the ongoing national convention.
He further revealed that the party’s popularity has surged in recent times, citing a significant increase in membership.
“Within 24 hours of INEC’s actions, over 40,000 Nigerians joined the ADC online. This clearly shows that Nigerians see ADC as the party to beat,” he said.
Solomon also claimed that recent political developments have pushed previously undecided politicians, particularly in northern Nigeria, to align with the party.
Taking a swipe at the ruling government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he argued that despite having widespread political control, there are indications of apprehension about the ADC’s rising influence.
“With control of many state structures and resources, one would expect confidence. Yet, there is visible concern about the growing strength of ADC,” he added.
He concluded by emphasizing that the party is now focused on organizing its primaries and selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 elections, expressing optimism that ADC will play a decisive role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
