The Senator representing Jigawa South has urged the Federal government through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to provide palliative support to Laya Town in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State, following a recent windstorm that ravaged the area.

Senator Mustapha Khabeeb in his motion tagged “Urgent Need to Provide Palliative Support to Laya Town in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State” during plenary on Thursday, highlighting the widespread destruction caused by the windstorm, which resulted in loss of lives, injuries, and displacement of people.

The Lawmaker noted that the windstorm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, destroyed houses, farmlands, schools, and essential infrastructure, leading to the displacement of people and families from their ancestral homes.

He expressed concern that the people of Laya town, who are mostly less privileged, are now living in destitution, suffering, and fear of future disasters.

While adopting the motion, the Senate urged the relevant agencies to send relief materials, especially building materials, to enable the people of Laya town to rebuild their homes and alleviate their pains, particularly with the impending rainy season. The committees on Environment and Legislative Compliance were mandated to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.

In a show of support, the Senate also agreed with Senator Khabeeb that the people of Laya town require urgent assistance to rebuild their lives and communities.
