The House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights has approved the 2026 budget proposal of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), presented by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Anthony Ojukwu (SAN).

Dr. Ojukwu commended the committee for its cooperation and support, which led to the successful passage and implementation of the 2025 budget. The committee chairman, Honourable Abiola Makinde, expressed satisfaction with the NHRC’s 2025 performance and 2026 budget proposal.

“We are really impressed with your 2025 budget performance,” Makinde said. “We are also okay with the 2026 budget proposal, and if we discover any infraction, we will call you back to answer. Notwithstanding, we are okay with it.”

Dr. Ojukwu informed the committee that the NHRC is still operating from rented offices across the country, except in a few states with their own buildings. He pleaded with the committee to continue its support to enable the commission to acquire its own buildings nationwide.

The 2026 budget proposal is part of President Bola Tinubu’s ₦58.18 trillion budget, which allocates funds for various sectors, including human rights and social welfare.
