Bill to Establish Federal University of Agriculture, Darazo, Bauchi State Scales Second Reading
The Senate has taken a significant step towards establishing the Federal University of Agriculture Darazo, Bauchi State,as the introduction of the Federal Universities of Agriculture Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025 (SB.596). The bill aims to provide for the establishment of the university and promote agricultural education, research, and development in the region as well as ameliorate food insecurity in the country.
According to Senator Ningi in the lead debate, the university will address the need for agricultural education, training, and research in Bauchi State, the North East, and Nigeria as a whole. The institution will focus on enhancing agricultural research and development, providing holistic development of agricultural education, knowledge, skills, and extension services.
The objectives of the bill include establishing the Federal University of Agriculture Darazo, training agriculturalists and farmers, serving as an institution for advanced agricultural research, producing qualified Nigerians to offer services to farmers, and developing realistic and practically oriented curriculum.
The establishment of the university is expected to have a significant impact on the agricultural sector, contributing to the country’s GDP and providing employment opportunities. As Senator Ningi noted, agriculture is the largest livelihood provider, especially in rural areas, and its allied sectors can contribute significantly to the GDP.

The total allocation for the university’s establishment is approximately ₦1.13 billion, with personnel costs, overheads, and capital expenditures accounted for.
